Wyoming state’s agriculture committee has sent a bill to its
legislators calling for mandatory County of Origin Labeling for beef sold at
retail.
South Dakota’s legislature approved a similar bill last
week.
County-of-Origin Labeling makes it expensive for meat
packers to identify carcasses and cuts by country of origin, meaning that they
either bid less for foreign livestock or simply don’t buy any.
COOL cost Canadian livestock farmers billions before the
World Trade Organization ruled that the U.S. federal government couldn’t
discriminate that way.
