The New Zealand Supreme Court has ruled in Canada’s favour,
clearing the way for Canadians to continue selling raw pork to customers there.
Farmers challenged the import regulation which came into
effect in 2011, aiming for a ban on imports of raw pork from any country where
pigs are infected with PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome
virus.
The Supreme Court listened to the challenge in June and
released its decision this week.
Also affected are raw pork imports from the European Union,
the United States and Mexico.
Those who filed the challenge were ordered to pay $25,000 to
the federal government to cover its legal costs in defending its regulation.
