Maple Lodge Farms of Norval, Ont., has landed the contract to supply KFC Canada’s restaurants with hahal-standard chicken.
KFC Canada said all chicken on the menu will comply with halal guidelines by the end of the year. Pork will be eliminated from KFC stores that do not share menus with Taco Bell.
The move is intended, according to the company, to be more inclusive, as explained in the statement by Luqman Rabbani, a research and development and operations manager with KFC, which is owned by Yum! Brands.
Halal standards are required by faithful Muslims who are about five per cent of the Canadian population.
Meatingplace Magazine reports that some KFC customers did not know they were eating halal chicken and are turned off.
