Ann Slater has been acclaimed first vice-president of the
National Farmers Union during its annual meeting in Ottawa.
Jan Slomp, a dairy farmer from Alberta, was elected
president.
Joan Brady of Huron County was acclaimed Women’s president.
Slater served as head of the Ontario branch of the NFU last
year and went through a difficult challenge testifying before the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Appeal Tribunal which twice denied the organization
the right to stable funding under provincial legislation.
The NFU eventually won a court appeal and the tribunal
followed the court order to grant the NFU accreditation.
