Harrisvaccine says it has shipped 770,000 doses of a vaccine
to counter Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PED).
They have gone to hog operations in Iowa and North Carolina
while the company continues to seek approval from the United States Department
of Agriculture to market the vaccine on a national basis under a provisional
licence for emergency response.
It can be purchased under veterinary prescription.
The disease was first noticed last spring, but has spread to
hog farms in 20 states. So far there have been no cases confirmed in Canada.
Harrisvaccines,
based in Ames, Iowa, says it’s too
early to tell how effective its new vaccine will be.
The
company said it hopes the U.S.D.A. will grant approval for routine use of the
vaccine by summer.
