Bayer buys pesticide research company

Bayer AG is buying Targenomix, a spin-off of the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology.

It has been working with Targenomix since 2014, looking for molecules that can be made and marketed as safe and effective pesticides.

One that is in the pipeline now would control grasses with a post-emergent herbicide, the first in that category in 30 years. A number of other molecules have been identified and are undergoing trials and development.

"Targenomix’ approach has proven to be very successful," said Dr. Robert Reiter, head of research and development at Bayer’s Crop Science Division.

"Combining Bayer’s leading capabilities and proven crop protection pipeline with Targenomix’ flexible start-up mindset, deep multi-omics technology, and systems biology expertise will allow us jointly to continue to deliver novel modes of action," said Dr. Sebastian Klie, chief executive officer of Targenomix.
