Chinese researchers create GMO calf

While Canada cuts agricultural research and falls ever further behind, China continues to surge ahead.

A recent example is a genetically-engineered calf born at a research facility in Northern China.

The calf is designed to produce milk with an enzyme to dissolve lactose.

That would resolve the issue of lactose intolerance to milk and dairy products. Lactose intolerance is common in many Third World countries where adequate nutrition is a major issue.

The calf, named "Lakes", was born April 24 at a lab of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University.

Lakes is healthy and strong, said lab professor Zhang Li.

Zhang and his research team genetically engineered an embryo that was transplanted into the womb of a cow in July, and Lakes was born about nine months later, said Zhang.

The Third World will be looking to China for agricultural development and Canada will be a has-been because of our lack of political leadership. We've blown our agriculture budgets on multi-billion-dollar subsidies that have bought us nothing for the future.
