Campylobacter bacteria show up often in
retail-ready chicken, posing a threat of food poisoning.
Now researchers at Ohio State University say
they have developed a vaccine that holds promise for keeping Campylobacter
bacteria from multiplying in chickens’ guts.
“Numerous vaccination strategies have been
evaluated to develop effective vaccines against Campylobacter jejuni
colonization in poultry but with limited success,” author Thavamathi Annamalai
says in a paper published in the August issue of
Poultry Science.
He and his colleagues conducted several
experiments and say that either oral of injected vaccination might control
Campylobacter in chickens.
