Cardiff dead at 79

Murray Cardiff, one of the most popular Members of Parliament, has died at Listowel Memorial Hospital. He was 79.

He was elected to represent Huron-Perth three times, beginning in 1980, and was defeated by Paul Steckle in 1993.

Cardiff worked hard to represent farmers in Ottawa, attending hundreds of farm meetings in and around his constituency.

He twice served as parliamentary secretary to former agriculture minister John Wise, then as parliamentary secretary to the President of the Privy Council and the Solicitor General.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Melville Presbyterian Church in Brussels.
