Alberta egg grader suspended

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has suspended the registration of a Hutterite colony’s egg-grading facility in southern Alberta.

The CFIA says it fails to meet sanitation standards and that it has other concerns that the colony has not addressed.

The Cluny Colony Egg Grading Facility is east of Calgary. It is the first suspension of an egg-grading facility in more than five years.

The agency says the facility will not be allowed to resume operating until it shows it can effectively manage food safety risks.

The Canadian Press report on the situation notes that the CFIA says it inspects all registered egg-grading stations to protect consumers from undue risk of salmonella, a bacteria that can make people sick.

It must have been really bad at that colony because here in Ontario, the two dominant egg graders pass cracks through common wash water and sell them in Grade A cartons.
