United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Purdue predicts the country’s meat packers will be open within a week to 10 days.
He told a news conference “I think we’ve turned a corner. We see these plants coming back online.
“Obviously because of some infected employees, they won’t be full force for a while.”
Trump issued an executive order last week designating meat processing facilities as “critical infrastructure.”
Among large plants that have re-opened already are the Smithfield Foods pork plant at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the JBS pork plant at Worthington, Minn., which partially opened Wednesday, and the Tyson Foods Tyson Foods plant at’ Dakota City, Neb.
