Second avian flu case in Nova Scotia

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed a second case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Nova Scotia, this time in a commercial flock.

The OIE (international animal health organization) has been notified and trade barriers may result.

The first Nova Scotia case was in a backyard flock. CFIA said then that farmers ought to take biosecurity precautions, indicating that the disease is likely coming from wild birds.

The disease is deadly to poultry and highly contagious. Flocks that are infected are destroyed and the CFIA establishes a quarantine zone forbidding any traffic in or out.

In late December and mid-January the CFIA confirmed avian influenza in poultry in the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, One of those was an exhibition farm.
