Poland and Hungary have banned grain from the Ukraine because it has depressed their prices and pushed farmers into losses.
Ukraine intended the grain to pass through those countries on its way to traditional customers in Northern Africa and the Middle East, but too much didn’t make it to export ports.
Ukraine is a major suppliers of grains to African and Middle Eastern countries which are short of food.
The United Nations and Turkey brokered a deal with Russia to allow some exports through the Baltic sea, but that has not been sufficient to handle all of Ukraine’s grain trade and the deal remains tenuous as Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine continues.
