The National Farmers Union has attacked Canada’s five
dominant supermarket chains for high food prices.
Food prices have gone up by more than the general rate of
inflation, but prices received by farmers by less, it said.
Five grocery chains control 75 per cent of the market, the
NFU said and shoppers have few choices, making it easier for retailers to raise
prices without losing customers.
It said supply management is better for farmers and fairer for
consumers.
Dairy and poultry are under supply management, but farmers
producing other commodities have shown scant interest in adopting it.
