Burnbrae Holdings Ltd. has closed a new
plant it built at Sackville, N.B., to process surplus eggs.
The company, controlled by Joe Hudson, started
Les Oeufs Bec-O Inc. with a $3.4-million provincial loan in 2006 and opened the
28,000-square-foot plant in 2007.
The city's mayor said the company simply couldn’t
increase volume enough to make it pay.
Ian McFall, Hudson’s son-in-law, told a local newspaper
reporter that the decision to close the plant didn’t come lightly.
He also said it’s a first-class food-processing facility, so the mayor hopes it can be sold to somebody who keeps it operating.
When the plant opened, Hudson praised the New Brunswick
government for “outstanding cooperation” to get the plant built.
Burnbrae is the largest egg-producing and egg-processing
business in Canada.
