Angry neighbours shut down hog giant

The world’s largest hog farm has been shut down by neighbours angry about odours from the operation in Chile.

The farm, which can have up to 2.3 million hogs, will be shut down as government authorities step in to take control and begin an environmental cleanup.

The neighbours blocked traffic, so the owners couldn’t get feed to the pigs. Some of the 500,000 pigs in the barns have begun to die from lack of feed and water.

The operation is in Chile’s north, in the Atacama Desert. It’s owned by Agrosuper S.A.

After the blockade began May 17, the company evacuated its staff.
