The recall of hamburgers made at Belmont Packers in Toronto
has expanded to include all of the Loblaws outlets across Canada.
It started with Sobeys house brand, Compliments Super
burgers.
Loblaws and Sobeys are the largest Canadian supermarket
chains, so the recall could rival the record-setting beef recall by XL Foods
Inc. of Brooks, Alta.
The problem is the same – E. coli 0157:H7.
Loblaws’ recall is its President’s Choice Beef Burgers. They’re
sold in all Loblaws stores, including Zehr’s Markets, Fortinos, No Frills,
Great Canadian Superstores and T&T Supermarkets.
Compliments Super burgers are sold in Sobeys, Freshco
Foodland and Price Chopper. The Sobeys recall is limited to Ontario. Loblaws
recall is national.
Webers Bucket of Burgers, sold by a company famous for its
hamburger restaurant spanning Highway 11 north of Toronto, is also involved in
the recall.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there may be more
recalls as its investigation continues.
Although the public health unit at London, Ont., has
reported half a dozen illnesses associated with the burgers, the Public Health
Agency of Canada has not yet posted any information about the outbreak on its
website.
