Produce fraud brings $6,900 fine

Perry Impens was caught labeling imported peppers as Product of Canada and has been fined $6,900 after pleading guilty in provincial court in Windsor.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency figured it was too early in the season for Impens to be selling Product-of-Canada peppers at the Ontario Food Terminal and when it checked, it discovered they were imported from Mexico and then Impens applied the Product-of-Canada labels.

The discovery was made in January during a routine CFIA tour of inspection at the terminal.
