While other provinces appear to have nipped Porcine Epidemic
Diarrhea virus outbreaks in the bud, the highly-contagious disease continues to
show up in more Ontario hog barns.
The Ontario toll increased by another three farms, all of
them finisher barns, on Mar. 21.
There have now been outbreaks at 12 finisher barns since
Mar. 4.
The only non-finisher-barn outbreak since then is a
nursery-barn operation in Huron County.
The most recent finisher-barn cases are in Bruce, Huron and
Brant counties.
Most finisher pigs recover from this virus after a few days
of severe diarrhea and vomiting.
Nursing piglets usually die so mortality rates range from 80
to 100 per cent in farrowing barns.
