Food poisoning may lead to charges

Dr. Malcolm Lock, medical officer of health for Brant County, is asking that charges be laid against a caterer whose customers fell ill with food poisoning.

About 100 people attending a luncheon Sept. 10 at South Dumfries Community Centre in St. George fell ill after eating egg salad wraps, chicken wraps and potato salad.

Dr. Lack says he believes there’s enough evidence to lay charges under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

The scope of the outbreak necessitated the health unit "do everything we can under the law," Lock said.

He said the local Crown Attorney’s office has yet to make a final decision and said if and when charges are laid, then he will name the caterer.

Lock has banned the caterer from catering and handling any food for public consumption.
Almost all the people who were sickened had recovered by Oct. 5.

The transportation of the food was "totally inadequate," Lock told health board members.

The caterer was not registered with the health unit nor inspected by food inspectors.
