Health Minister
Jane Philpott has opened consultations on updating the Canada Food Guide.
There will
probably be intense lobbying, judging by previous updates, as food processing
companies and farm commodity groups fight to preserve their markets.
Philpott has said
she intends to introduce regulations to eliminate trans fats and reduce the
amount of salt in processed foods.
She also aims to
reduce obesity with emphasis on children’s diets and food-company advertising
aimed at influencing their choices.
She also says
Canadians are not eating enough fruits and vegetables, whole grains and milk
and not getting enough calcium and fibre.
