Kernza is a new grain crop

General Mills is giving $500,000 to the University of Minnesota to work with The Land Institute to further develop and commercialize a new grain crop called Kernza.

It’s a grass-like relative of wheat, grows roots up to 10 feet deep which makes it drought tolerant and is a perennial.

But yields so far have been low and the grain is small, making it more challenging to mill into flour.

General Mills intends to market it under its Carscadian Farm label.

Researchers began work in the 1980s, looking for a perennial grain that could be commercialized.
