Canada’s dairy industry will have to make do with $350 from
the federal government to prepare it for free trade with Europe.
The Stephen Harper government announced $4.2 billion in
compensation, but that included poultry farmers.
Harper’s generosity was widely criticized.
Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay is offering $250
million to dairy farmers to improve their competitiveness; he mentioned robotic
milkers.
Processors will get $100 million; he mentioned making new
products. That would be diplomatic talk for making diafiltered milk to displace
imports from the United States.
