How $4.2 billion became $350 million

Canada’s dairy industry will have to make do with $350 from the federal government to prepare it for free trade with Europe.

The Stephen Harper government announced $4.2 billion in compensation, but that included poultry farmers.

Harper’s generosity was widely criticized.

Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay is offering $250 million to dairy farmers to improve their competitiveness; he mentioned robotic milkers.

Processors will get $100 million; he mentioned making new products. That would be diplomatic talk for making diafiltered milk to displace imports from the United States.
