McCain Foods (not to be confused with Michael McCain of
Maple Leaf Foods Inc) is responsible for recalls of about 100 million pounds of
processed foods across North America.
The issue began in mid-October at a McCain-owned plant at
Colton, California, that made food ingredients from chopped onions, peppers and
roasted corn.
The ingredients spread salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes
far and wide, including Walmart and Whole Foods retail stores.
The recalls of all those products amounted to the largest
food recall last year, if not in history
.
Now McCain is closing the plant and laying off 100
employees, admitting that one of the reasons is the recall. Andrea Davis, who
speaks for the company, said closing the plant “was ultimately a business
decision.”
McCain Foods is best known for processing French fries. It
has 53 plants around the world.
