African Swine Fever enters Germany

African Swine Fever has been identified in a wild boar in Germany, near the border with Poland.

There are potential implications for Canadian hog farmers.

Germany is Europe’s largest pork producer.

The news has prompted South Korea and the Philippines to ban pork from Germany. More countries might follow.

There is fear that China might be one of them; 61 per cent of Germany’s pork exports go to China and that’s 14 per cent of China’s pork imports.

If China does ban pork from Germany, the Chinese might start ordering more from Canada and the United States.
