Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway Co. set records for grain shipments last year.
CP’s record was 31.32 tonnes and CN’s was more than 32 million tonnes.
CP said it moved a record 8.84 million tonnes during the fourth quarter; December was a record of 2.84 million tonnes.
CN said it also set a record of 9.25 million tonnes in the fourth quarter and more than 2.84 million tonnes in December.
CP says it has added 3,700 of its commitment for 5,900 hopper units that carry 15 per cent more volume and 10 per cent more weight compared with older cars they are replacing.
The Canadian Transportation Agency said CN and CP exceeded their maximum grain revenue entitlements for the 2019-20 crop year and have 30 days to pay the amount by which they exceeded their entitlements plus a five per cent penalty.
Don't ask me to go into the details of how that policy works.
