Maple Leaf to expand plant protein business

Maple Leaf Foods is investing about $100 million to buy a 118,000-square-foot building in Indianapolis to produce tempeh.

Tempeh is an Indonesian product that is made from fermented soybeans and sometimes includes beans and grains. It is an ingredient for Maple Leaf’s plant protein business.

It’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Greenleaf Foods, will be in charge of the plant which is expected to begin production in the first half of next year. It will employ about 115 people.

Greenleaf announced in 2019 that it would be building a huge plant protein factory in nearby Shelbyville, but that project has been put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic.
