U.S. farm leaders push TPP

Farm leaders want the United States to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership and are optimistic that the Biden administration will listen.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the TPP negotiations soon after he assumed office four years ago.

At the time he said the proposals on the table were a bad deal for the U.S., the same thing he said about the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

Now the Biden administration is trying to heal broken relationships with countries around the world and believes trade is a good way to achieve that.

There are indications that the Philippines and South Korea also want to join the TPP.

Having the U.S. out of the TPP provided Canada an opportunity to increase exports to members, but there are few signs that Canada has actually achieved any outstanding gains.

Japan was a bright hope for Canadian agriculture, but the U.S. negotiated a direct trade deal with Japan that made those Canadian gains for commodities such as pork short-lived.
