Howard Mora and Alan Buxbaum, former co-owners of A. Stein Meat Products Inc. of New York City, will each have to pay more than $100,000 US for fraud.
They sold choice-grade beef to SSAP LLC and A&B Restaurant Group LLC, which are restaurant groups in New York City, but they claimed it was prime grade.
Judge Kiyo Matsumoto sentenced each to five years of probation and criminal monetary penalties of $88,400 in restitutions, $20,000 in fines and $100 in assessments.
It's nice to see that justice rules in New York City. Here in Ontario, as I have reported year after year, the two dominant egg-grading businesses routinely cheated by declaring eggs Grade A that did not qualify.
And the Egg Farmers of Ontario marketing board participated in the feud by collecting marketing fees on those phoney Grade A eggs. Even after the board knew, or surely ought to have known, that Canadian Food Inspection Agency audits were routinely identifying the fraud.
