Loblaws profit climbs 11.7 per cent

Loblaws profits increased by 11.7 per cent its third quarter compared with last year.

Revenues were up by five per cent to $18.3-billion. That’s an increase of less than the Statistics Canada report for September food inflation of 5.8 per cent and August of 6.9 per cent, the company noted.

Loblaws is Canada's largest supermarket business.

Last month, the federal government announced that grocery chains promised to offer discounts and price-matching in a bid to “stabilize” prices.

Critics said the plan mostly included strategies the sector already employs, such as offering discounts and price-matching and price freezes leading up to Christmas.
