Eight companies involved in agriculture and food are counted
among Canada’s largest 100 companies by Globe and Mail magazine Report on
Business.
The measure is how much their shares are worth.
Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan ranked tenth with a market
capitalization of more than $34 billion.
Agrium Inc., another fertilizer company, ranked 31st
at a value of $12.6 billion.
Loblaw Cos. was 40th at $9 billion and was
counted again as part of George Weston Ltd. at 56t and $7.57 billion.
Saputo was right behind Loblaws in 41st place
with shares worth $8.9 billion.
Next was Tim Hortons at 45th and
$8.6 billion.
Metro Inc., which usually ranks third among Canadian
supermarket chains, was in 75th spot at $5.2 billion, well ahead of
the Empire Group, which owns Sobeys and is usually ranked second, at 87th position and $3.9
billion.
Farm Credit Canada was sixth among crown corporations.
Gay
Lea Foods Co-operative seventh among co-operatives and Hensall District Co-op
tenth.
McCain Foods, which is family owned and therefore not listed in the ranking of companies by market capitalization, had the highest revenue
among food-products companies with revenues of more than $6 billion, just
edging out Saputo Inc., also with revenues of $6 billion.
Maple Leaf Foods was third at $4.9 billion in revenues,
followed by Nestlé Canada
and Cott Corp. ahead of sixth-ranked Olymel with revenues of $2.2 billion.
Loblaws was easily first among food distribution companies
with revenues of more than $31 billion, but Alimentation Couche-Tard was next
at $18.9 billion and ahead of Sobeys Inc. at $15.8 billion and Metro Inc. with
revenues of $11.5 billion.
