Ralph Goodale, now the Liberal critic on matters relating to the Canadian Wheat Board, has written a letter to the editor of the Manitoba Cooperator newspaper in which he predicts that farmers will get less for their wheat and barley now that the Canadian Wheat Board no longer holds a monopoly on export sales.
Goodale knows best. I guess that's why some farmers defied the rules to truck their what to the United States - so they could get lower prices.
Trust Goodale. When he was the minister responsible for the wheat board, he appointed directors. And farmers had no choice.
Now they enjoy the opportunity to pick and choose to whom they will sell their crops, when and where.
We heard some of the same hand-wringing criticisms when the Ontario Wheat Producers Marketing Board lost its monopoly. I haven't heard any groundswell restore that monopoly.
