Quality loses Russian market

Quality Packers has lost the right to export pork to Russia because the food safety bureaucracy there says it has detected residues of ractopamine in pork from the Ontario company.

Quality is the second-largest hog-slaughtering business in Ontario and a major pork exporter to many nations.

Russia also banned pork from Aliments Asta Inc. of Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, Que., and from John Morrell Food Group’s plant at Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Russia also banned food from Brazil, also because of ractopamine which is used as a growth promotant for both beef and pork production.

Brazil said Russia has set a stricter tolerance level than most of its export customers.
