The Canadian Food Inspection Agency collected $343,600 in
administrative penalties during the second quarter of this year.
Transportation violations under the Health of Animals Act
accounted for $319,000 of that total from 44 penalties; there were another 54
who got off with a warning.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it names repeat
offenders, but there are no names attached to the report on transportation
violations.
There was one $10,000 fine levied in Ontario under the Plant
Protection Act and one in Western Canada, also for $10,000. One warning was
issued in Western Canada.
There were was a long list of people and companies who gave
up their organic certification; two were suspended in Ontario – Ron and Dianna
Coutts on March 18 and again on April 22 and Dixie Poultry Co. on April 10.
A number of companies had products detained by Canadian Food
Inspection Agency inspectors, including burgers at the Cargill Limited plant in
Brampton on March 25 because of E. coli, Burnbrae Farms Ltd. shell eggs at
Mississauga on March 22, Maple Lynn Foods (a division of Burnbrae) on Feb. 26
for eggs, Grand River Poultry for raw chicken wings and Ivanhoe Cheese of Madoc
on Jan. 8 for listeria.
McCain Foods Limited at Montreal ran into a lot of problems
with imperial rolls that were detained o March 25, 26, 27 and 28 and mini pizza
detained on March 27.
Nutrioeuf had shell eggs detained at St. Hyacinthe on March
15.
Pesticides in fresh cucumbers resulted in detentions during
March at Burnac Produce Ltd., A. J. Lanzarotta Wholesale and Gambles Ontario
Produce.
