China is investigating the world’s largest dairy processors
to determine whether they are engaged in price-fixing the market for infant
formulas.
The probe involves Danone, Nestlé, Mead Johnson, Abbott, and Wyeth
Nutrition.
The companies say they are co-operating with the
investigators from China’s National Development and Reform Commission.
The probe also involves a company based in Hong Kong.
Meanwhile Chinese investors are building a large processing
plant in Toronto to make infant formula for the Chinese market.
Imported infant formulas became popular after Chinese
companies were found adulterating their products with melanine.
