Belmont burger recall expands again

The hamburger recall by Belmont Meat Packers of Toronto has expanded yet again, this time to cover frozen patties sold across Canada in all Loblaws stores and Sobeys stores in Ontario.

The Loblaws recall is for Sunspun brand hamburgers sold at Loblaws, nofrills, Real Canadian Superstore, Zehrs Markets, Your Independent Grocer, Wholesale Club, Extra Foods, Fortinos, Freshmart, AXEP and Cash&Carry stores.

In Quebec it includes Maxi, Presto/Club, Entrepot and Save Easy stores. In Atlantic Canada it includes all of these plus Red*&White stores. In the West it also includes Extra Foods, Shop Easy and Westfair Independents.

Sobeys recall in Ontario includes Compliments-brand burgers sold in Sobeys, FreshCo, FoodLand and Price Chopper stores and in the West Sobeys, IGA and Price Chopper stores.

The issue is E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria that produce poisons that can severely harm health.

The CFIA says “there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products,” yet the Ontario Ministry of Health is reporting at least nine cases of E. coli food poisoning of people who consumed Sobeys-marketed hamburger from Belmont Meat Packers.
