Black appeal scheduled for May 14

Glenn Black’s appeal to get an increase for small-flock chicken farmers faces its first challenge at a tribunal hearing May 14.

The Chicken Farmers of Ontario marketing board is trying to derail the appeal before it begins.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food Appeal Tribunal will hold a hearing on the chicken-board motion at its offices at 1 Stone Road, Guelph, beginning at 9:30 a.m. May 14.

Black, who lives at Providence Bay, Manitoulin Island, has been researching and campaigning for more than a year, backing small-flock owners who have asked the chicken board to increase from 300 to 2,000 the number of chickens farmers can raise every year without holding marketing-board quota.

He has become so frustrated by the intransigence of the Ontario board and the national agency, Chicken Farmers of Canada, that he has taken to calling them the Chicken Mafia.
