Egg prices double in U.S.

Egg prices doubled in the United States from April to May and continue to rise.

They will keep on rising this fall when seasonal demand increases, say market analysts employed by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Wholesale egg prices increased by 84.5 per cent from May to June, reports the U.S. Department of Labour.

That’s the largest single-month increase since 1937.

Avian influenza has claimed a number of flocks of more than one million egg-laying hens each this year. Many of those in Iowa were dedicated to producing for processing plants as distinct from retail stores.

Canada is in no position to fill the gap because the Canadian market has been chronically short of eggs for at least several years.

Moreover, if Canada did start to make significant exports, there is a risk that complaints would result in World Trade Organization rulings that Canadian exports are illegally subsidized via supply management. That was the ruling on Canadian milk exports to the U.S.
