The Ontario Farm Products Marketing
Commission has finally officially trimmed the supply-management powers of the
Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board.
The amendments that took effect at
the end of July, and were posted on the commission website this week, “revoke
the majority of the OFCTGMB's marketing authorities.
The tobacco board gave up on supply management years ago.
“Authorities that remain include the
ability to stimulate the marketing and promotion of tobacco, provide voluntary
services, and charge fees for services requested by producers,” the commission’s
website posting says.
“The amended regulation retains a
provision requiring the Commission to approve any expenditure in excess of
$25,000.”
