Chicken processors revive appeal

The Association of Ontario Chicken Processors is asking to revive its appeal to the tribunal regarding the chicken board’s allocation of birds to various processing plants.

The appeal was filed in June, but put on hold at the request of the association which was negotiating with the chicken board.

The public hearings are now set for March 30 to April 1 at the headquarter of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal in Guelph.

The appeal is against the refusal of the Chicken Farmers of Ontario to accept its proposals for allocating birds to plants and for imposing penalties for failure to purchase mandated levels of chicken.

The AOCP has not responded to requests for more information about what it’s seeking from the tribunal.

Tribunal chairman Kirk Wahlstedt said the processors and the board continue to try to resolve the issues.

It is the second time the appeal has been revived since it was first filed.
