Bans on Brazilian beef expanding

China, the European Union, South Korea and Chile have all announced either bans or restrictions on beef from Brazil after a bribery scandal emerged this week.

Federal police say they have evidence that meat packers, including giants JBS and BRF, bribed inspectors so they could market meat that would have been condemned.

In some cases they added acid to mask the odour of rotting meat. In other cases they added cardboard to processed meats.

Twenty-one companies were identified by federal police when they announced their investigation this week.

It could be good news for Canadian beef exports.
