Conestoga Packers wins award

Conestoga Meat Packers has won the Best Business of the Year award from the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce.

The company is owned by 141 hog farmers and employs more than 900 workers who slaughter and process 28,000 hogs per week.

The award citation mentioned the company’s Producer Portal that members can access to get production and performance information and keep up with industry news and events.

The company was founded in 1982 after hog prices had plunged, but meat-packer profits had soared, and it was felt that combining the two would provide steadier financial results.

The plant is on a rural road east of Kitchener and near Breslau.
