Californians voted 59 per cent in favour of banning cages for hens and confinement housing for pigs and calves.
Farmers said it will increase costs when the law comes into effect in 2022. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said it does not go far enough.
The proposition that was put to voters was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States.
The proposal is to not only ban California’s farmers from using cages for hens and stalls for sows and veal calves, but also bans the import from other states of products that fail to meet the California housing standards.
