An investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has led to 38 charges being laid under Health of Animals Regulations against a chicken-catching company and those who hired it.
The charges were laid against Elite Farm Services Ltd. and Dwayne Paul Dueck of Chilliwack, B.C., and Sofina Foods Inc.of Markham, Ontario.
It is alleged that Elite Farm Services Ltd., Dwayne Paul Dueck, and Sofina Foods Inc.”unlawfully beat an animal, to wit: chickens, being loaded or unloaded in a way likely to cause injury or undue suffering to it, in violation of section 139(1) and did unlawfully load or cause to be loaded, an animal, to wit: chickens, in a way likely to cause injury or undue suffering to it in violation of section 139(2),’ the CFIA said on its website.
They are all to appear in provincial court in Chilliwack on Dec. 18.
