Canadians in the food business will need a $250 licence from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency by Jan. 15.
The agency said online applications are now open at My CFIA.
The licences come with a new set of regulations under the Safe Food For Canadians program.
Licences will be required for all exporters because the United States requires them to meet its standards. The licences last for two years; those who currently hold a CFIA licence will not need to renew it until the expiry date.
The CFIA said “compliance with some requirements will be necessary immediately on January 15, 2019, while others will be phased in over the following 12-30 months.
“Business owners are encouraged to consult the sector-specific timelines on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website to determine if and when new requirements apply to them.”
The CFIA said on its website that “Safe Food for Canadians Regulations will improve and strengthen Canada’s food safety system, enable industry to innovate, and create greater market access opportunities for Canadian food products exported abroad.”
I can't see that the regulations will make much difference. Enforcement might.
