CFIA proposes changes to fertilizer regulations

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has posted proposals to amend the fertilizer act, but none of the proposals will result in any major change.

It appears that the changes are mainly housekeeping and will have little impact on farmer-customers.

There was a time when the CFIA sampled and analyzed farm-ready blends and published the results which indicated widespread failure to meet specifications in terms of value for money.

Had the CFIA not used value for money, and insisted that each of nitrogen, phosphorous and potash fell within an allowed margin of error, the results would have been much worse.

The CFIA abandoned the sampling and testing and left the industry to self-regulate and customers to be vigilant.
