A British organization says 7,000 Canadians have signed its online pledge to eat vegan – no meat or dairy products – for January. That compares with 1,500 last year.
And the Toronto Vegetarian Association is promoting a one-week pledge to eat vegan.
Veganuary is a registered British charity that promotes the idea of trying out a plant-based diet for the first month of the year, and tracks online the number of people who take their pledge.
So far the non-profit has seen more than 200,000 sign-ups worldwide for this year's challenge.
Canada’s meat and dairy industry are also protesting new dietary guidelines from the federal government because they recommend less meat and dairy.
Veganuary joins a growing list of January-only pledges, such as no shaving for Januhairy and no alcohol for Dry January and no credit cards for No Spend January.
