Canada and the European Union have signed a memorandum of understanding so they will accept zoning for continued trade in the event of an outbreak of African Swine Fever.
The Canadian pork industry lobbied for years to get the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to accept and implement zoning protocols.
One of the first zoning moves was to establish a divide between East and West at a highway check-point between Ontario and Manitoba.
In the event of an outbreak of African Swine Fever, Canada would be able to continue exporting pigs and pork from the area free of the disease.
