China’s rulers have admitted there have been mistakes in trying to stop the spread of African Swine Fever.
For example, the State Council said protocols for transporting hogs were not strict enough and the government lacked enough capacity to test for the disease among hogs delivered to packing plants.
The State Council now says the nation needs to rebuild hog production capacity by encouraging large-scale farming. It will offer subsidies.
China has reported 120 outbreaks since the first one last August and there are unofficial estimates that half of the nation’s sow herd has been wiped out either by the disease or by disease-prevention culling.
