Chinese officials have confirmed an outbreak of highly-pathogenic avian influenza in Hunan province, which is also where coronavirus emerged.
The National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory confirmed over the weekend that broiler chickens at a farm in Shangquing District of Shaoyang City tested positive for the H1N5 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).
Officials said that 4,500 of the 7,850 birds at the farm were felled by the virus.
The Ministry also confirmed that 17,828 birds have been culled so far and all of the sick and culled birds have been safely disposed of to prevent additional H1N5 outbreaks.
